WALKS INSIDE VENICE  July 21-23, 2008

First Tour Monday, July 21st

San Marco : the Power of the Past, the Everlasting Myth - The Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Prisons - A must for any visitor to Venice. St Mark' s Basilica with the spiritual, all-pervading light of its golden mosaics, with its sumptuously coloured marble floor, will introduce the theme of Venice' s intense relations with Constantinople and the Eastern world. We shall then enter the Doges Palace, seat of the Venetian power for over nine centuries. Today's visitors, like past ones, will be overwhelmed by the wealth of its decoration, and will learn about the rise and fall of  “La Serenissima, the  most Serene Venetian Republic”.  Cross the Bridge of Sighs  and  the Prisons, still in use until 1922, and then back to the Palace for a last view of the majestic Giants' Staircase.

Costs: 40-65 Euro

Second tour Tuesday, July 22nd

San Polo and the Venetian Colour - Not to be missed, especially by art lovers. The huge church of the Frari possesses some absolute masterpieces of Venetian painting: Giovanni Bellini' s 1488 "Sacra Conversazione", Titian's revolutionary „Assumption of the Virgin", and his “Pala Pesaro”, still on their original altars. Just a few steps away  we find the marble facade of the “Scuola di S.Rocco”, once the seat of a brotherhood who strove to assist people during the plagues. Here Jacopo Tintoretto had  his greatest opportunity to express his visionary, at times almost terrific genius, achieving to some of his most unforgettable creations. We'll continue our journey into Venetian Colour by exploring the open air Rialto market, with its fish, fruit, and vegetables sellers, ideal place for wine and food tasting.

Costs: 37-60 euro

Third tour Wednesday,  July 23rd

Dorsoduro and a Venetian "palazzo"" This itinerary  takes you into some picturesque corners of the Dorsoduro district, Venice's Rive Gauche. Past the vast Campo Santa Margherita, where students and artists meet at the many open air café, we visit Ca' Rezzonico, one of the most flamboyant private residences on the Grand Canal. Designed by Baldassarre Longhena and completed by Giorgio Massari  the palazzo boasts scintillating frescoed ceilings by Giiambattista Tiepolo, original 18th century furniture, glass chandeliers and ceramics, plus the only outstanding Canalettoes still existing in Venice.  Past San Trovaso, one of the last gondola yards, we walk along the Zattere, the sunny  promenade lining the Giudecca Canal, much frequented by local people in the warm summer evenings, particularly  reknown for its icecream parlours.
