Mass Spectrometry

The Mass Spectrometry Research Facility at DiSC consists of seven main instruments.
They include the coupled setup with Gas Cromatography (GC/MS), High Pressure Liquid Cromatography (HPLC/MS) and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation-Time of Flight (MALDI_TOF). Interfaced ionization techniques and inlet systems include Electro Spray Ionisation (ESI), Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI) and Atmospheric Pressure Photo Ionisation (APPI).
A wide range of molecular systems can be investigated, including organic molecules, peptides, proteins, bio-polymers, synthetic polymers.
In addition to the interested research groups, a staff of three senior technicians is dedicated to the maintenance and activity of the Mass Spectrometry facility at DiSC, both for students training and for the development of experimental  methods. The facility also provides commercial services to industry where possible.

The Thermo Scientific™ Q Exactive™ Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer identiftes, quantifies and confirms more compounds rapidly and with confidence. This LC-MS/MS system combines quadruple precursor ion selection with high-resolution, accurate-mass (HRAM) Orbitrap detection to deliver exceptional performance and versatility. The Q Exactive Mass Spectrometer is equally useful for untargeted or targeted screening and a broad range of qualitative and quantitative applications in drug discovery, proteomics, environmental and food safety, clinical research and forensic toxicology.

The Agilent 6520 Accurate-Mass Q-TOF LC/MS system provide superior data quality and advanced analytical capabilities for profiling, identifying, characterizing, and quantifying low molecular-weight compounds and biomolecules with confidence.

This combination of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization source with a Time-Of-Flight mass analyzer offers high performance and flexibility for the multi-user core laboartory, allowing for gel spot analysis, protein biomarker discovery and MALDI mass spectrometry imaging, fast peptide and protein identification, high-sensitivity of MS and MS/MS data on small molecules as well as peptides and proteins, in any type of tissue.

The equipment includes a high performance chromatographic separation unit (HPLC) interfaced to an Agilent 1290 Infinity Diode Array Detector (DAD) and a 6130 single quadrupole ESI/MS. The equipment further includes an autosampler, binary pumping system and a temperature control unit.
