Graduate School of Molecular Sciences
The Graduate School of Molecular Sciences (Scuola di Dottorato in Scienze Molecolari, SDSM) starts on January 2005, taking place from the Doctoral Courses of Chemical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences, both active since 1984. The SDSM is strongly committed to excellence in education and research in the fundamental chemical sciences as well as exploring the connections between chemistry and the other natural sciences. In the period ranging from 2005 to 2010, 109 PhD students, uniformly distributed among the active research group of the departments of Chemical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences were enrolled at SDSM, and 68 of them have already got their Ph.D. degree. All students receive broad training that prepares them equally well for careers in industry or academia. In this regard, it is worth of note that the School enjoys strong ties with the chemical industry including campus visits, seminars, joint research, and support.
Upon joining a research group, our students can obtain advice on research, course selection, and career planning from advanced students in the research group as well as from the thesis adviser. The thesis research project is the single most important undertaking of a student's graduate career. Other requirements, including course work, written and oral examinations, seminars, and teaching, are intended to broaden the student's exposure to chemistry and to aid in developing the essential skills of oral and written scientific communication.
The outstanding accomplishments of students alumni of the DSMS reflect the departments' selective admission standards. In more details, the chemical culture of SDSM candidates is verified through a written examination consisting of sixty questions with multiple choice answers, asked in English and covering the following subjects: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry of Materials, Chemical Physics, Industrial Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry; Medicinal Chemistry, Applied Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology, Biochemistry Applied Biochemistry. Only candidates with a score higher than 49/70 are admitted to a colloquium during which the candidates have to describe the research project they would intend to carry on. Candidates may be admitted to SDSM if their finale score is higher that 70/100.
