IV-3 - Interfacial processes and nanoionics

Organizers: Rotraut Merkle, Joachim Maier (MPI for Solid State Research, Stuttgart).

The focus of this symposium is on fundamental questions regarding interfaces. Interfaces under concern are homojunctions such as grain boundaries but also heterojunctions such as solid-gas, solid-liquid and solid-solid interfaces. They are generally expected to lead to redistributions of defects with corresponding alteration of storage and transport. Not only will this cause size effects on transport and storage, but - in the case of mesoscopic systems - these effects may completely dominate the materials properties and allow one to tailor "artificial materials". Regarding surface reactions, defects in the surface and subsurface are expected to be decisive for the kinetics. These interface phenomena are of great relevance for most electrochemical devices.

Abstracts are solicited in, but not necessarily limited to, the following areas:

In this Symposium are also welcome those contributions which cover the topics beyond the above-described areas. This is done to provide the audience with a comprehensive description of Solid State Ionics. If your contribution is difficult to host within the above areas, please do not hesitate to contact directly the Conference Chairmen at ssi21@dii.unipd.it for advice.
