I-12 – Defect chemistry, transport and reactivity at gas/electrode interfaces

Increased interest in the fields of high temperature energy conversion technologies such as solid oxide fuel cells, electrolysis cells, and thermal water splitting, as well as the continuing importance of gas separation membranes, catalysts and sensors has promoted understanding of gas electrode reactions in solid state ionic devices in recent years.

This symposium will provide a forum for extensive discussion and exchange of information among the researchers who are engaged in both scientific and technological aspects of gas electrode interfaces. Topics will include traditional and advanced electrochemical approaches to the electrode reaction mechanism; defect chemistry, transport, and mechanical properties of electrode materials; ab-initio or other numerical modeling of microscopic or macroscopic behaviors of electrodes and electrochemical systems; electrode materials design and processing technologies; and novel experimental techniques that reveal the composition, structure, electronic states or transport of electrodes under operation.

The scope will cover any electrode materials on oxide ion conductors, proton conductors, and other ionic or mixed ionic-electronic conductors. Phenomena at direct interface between gas phase and solid ionic materials without electrodes are also included in the scope. Also of interest are possible modulations of catalytic activity, reactivity, and defect equilibrium of electrode materials under applied electrical potential, mechanical stress/strain, or electromagnetic waves including visible light or UV. Issues in practical applications related to gas electrode will also be discussed, such as degradation due to compositional and morphological instability of the materials, poisoning by impurities in gas phase, and cation inter-diffusion and kinetic demixing/decomposition.

In this Symposium are also welcome those contributions which cover the topics beyond the above-described areas.
