I-13 – Electro-chemo-mechanical coupling in energy storage and conversion materials

The relationships between electrical, chemical, and mechanical states of materials (“electro-chemo-mechanics”) are increasingly recognized as significantly impacting performance and durability of energy storage and conversion devices. Examples include deleterious chemical expansion upon ion intercalation or small stoichiometry changes (chemo-mechanical coupling), and the influence of strain on carrier concentrations and mobilities impacting ionic transport and surface reactivity (mechano-electrical and mechano-electrochemical coupling). Chemical strains generated during device operation may not only change materials’ local mechanical and electrochemical properties but also contribute to mechanical degradation and device failure. Therefore, understanding and modeling of these phenomena across multiple length scales – bridging atomic and device length scales – is important. On the other hand, electro-chemo-mechanical coupling of materials has beneficially enabled new characterization techniques to be developed, for indirectly probing defect behavior and associated properties, and also has the potential to lead to development of new solid state ionic devices. This interdisciplinary symposium aims to bring together researchers from diverse fields tackling the cross-cutting challenge of understanding, controlling, and using electro-chemo-mechanics of materials for fuel/electrolysis cells, batteries, catalysts, hydrogen storage materials, and other applications. For this reason, both experimental and computational submissions are encouraged.
